The realization of Dirac and Weyl physics in solids has made topological materials one of the main focuses of condensed matter physics. Recently, the topic of topological nodal line semimetals, materials in which Dirac or Weyl-like crossings along special lines in momentum space create either a closed ring or line of degeneracies, rather than discrete points, has become a hot topic in topological quantum matter. Here, we review the experimentally confirmed and theoretically predicted topological nodal line semimetals, focusing in particular on the symmetry protection mechanisms of the nodal lines in various materials. Three different mechanisms: a combination of inversion and time-reversal symmetry, mirror reflection symmetry, and nonsymmorphic symmetry and their robustness under the effect of spin orbit coupling are discussed. We also present a new Weyl nodal line material, the Te-square net compound KCu 2 EuTe 4 , which has several Weyl nodal lines including one extremely close to the Fermi level (<30 meV below E F ). Finally, we discuss potential experimental signatures for observing exotic properties of nodal line physics. ARTICLE HISTORY

Perovskite-type iridates SrIrO 3 and CaIrO 3 are a Dirac line node semimetal protected by crystalline symmetry, providing an interesting playground to investigate electron correlation effects on topological semimetals. The effect of Sn doping was examined by growing SrIr 1−x Sn x O 3 and CaIr 1−x Sn x O 3 thin films epitaxially on SrTiO 3 (001) substrate using pulsed laser deposition. Upon Sn doping, the semimetallic ground state switches into an insulator. As temperature is lowered, the resistivity, ρ(T ), of SrIr 1−x Sn x O 3 above a critical doping level (x c ∼ 0.1) shows a well-defined transition from the semimetal to a weakly ferromagnetic insulator at T = T c . In contrast, the ρ(T ) of CaIr 1−x Sn x O 3 with increasing x shows a rapid increase of magnitude but does not show clear signature of metal-insulator transition in the temperature dependence. We argue that the contrasted behavior of the two closely related iridates reflects the interplay between the effects of electron correlation and disorder enhanced by Sn doping.Recently 5d iridium oxides with perovskite-related structures have been explored extensively as a mine for exotic quantum phases, partly because of an interplay of strong spin-orbit interaction and electron correlation of the 5d electrons 1 . The strong spin-orbit coupling of ∼ 0.4 eV for 5d electrons, which is larger than the typical crystal field splitting of 0.1 eV within t 2g 2 , splits the t 2g bands with five

Ruddlesden-popper type Srn+1IrnO3n+1 compound is a major focus of condensed matter physics where the subtle balance between electron-electron correlation, spin-orbit interaction and crystal field effect brings a host of emergent phenomena. While it is understandable that a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating state with an easy-plane anisotropy is developed in Sr2IrO4 as the 2D limit of the series, it is intriguing that bilayer Sr3Ir2O7, with slightly higher effective dimensionality, stabilizes c-axis collinear antiferromagnetism. This also renders the Sr3Ir2O7 as a unique playground to study exotic physics near a critical spin transition point.However, the epitaxial growth of the Sr3Ir2O7 is still a challenging task because of the narrow growth window. In our research, we have studied the thermodynamic process during synthesis of Sr3Ir2O7 thin films. We successfully expanded the synthesis window by mapping out the relation between the thin film sample crystal structure and gas pressure. Our work thus provides a more accessible avenue to stabilize metastable materials.
