Correlating Design Performance to Eeg Activation: Early Evidence From Experimental Data

Abstract: This paper presents an EEG (Electroencephalography) study that explores correlations between the neurophysiological activations, the nature of the design task and its outputs. We propose an experimental protocol that covers several design-related tasks: including fundamental activities (e.g. idea generation and problem-solving) as well as more comprehensive task requiring the complex higher-level reasoning of designing. We clustered the collected data according to the characteristics of the design outcome and … Show more

“…The design of the experiment carried out to answer the research question was guided by already published experimental studies concerned with the electrophysiological investigation of human behaviour in design (for instance, Li et al (2021) and Vieira et al (2020)). The experimental procedure (Sect 3.2) enables the exploration of differences in engineers' brain activity during two 3D CAD modelling tasks (Sect 3.3).…”

“…The experimental procedure (Sect 3.2) enables the exploration of differences in engineers' brain activity during two 3D CAD modelling tasks (Sect 3.3). While the experimental setup (Sect 3.4) is originally developed for this research question, the data pre-processing (Sect 3.5) elaborates and adapts the pipeline suggested by Li et al (2021) so that it produces results for data analysis (Sect 3.6).…”

“…The EEG data processing was conducted in MATLAB ® using the EEGLAB toolbox 53 . An original script for data processing was developed according to the pipelines described by Li et al 54 , Vieira et al 28 , and Jia et al 55 . In the rst step, DC offset speci c for Emotiv EPOC + devices was removed with the in nite impulse response (IIR) lter.…”

“…The interest of this study is to grasp a resonance quantitatively with multimodal biosignal indicators as an interpersonal cognitive state during collaborative design which could enhance individual creativity and develop a co-creation phenomenon. The studies with EGG to grasp quantitatively interpersonal relationships (Motomura et al, 2015) and creative states (Li et al, 2021;Vieira et al, 2020) has been very active in recent years. There have been recognized limitations of measuring creative states with EEG; it allows so limited movements to measure that its experimental protocol cannot represent the intended situation in appropriate scale; it is difficult to interpretate more than its measured activity.…”
