Barn owls process sound-localization information in two parallel pathways, the midbrain and the forebrain pathway. Exctracellular recordings of neural responses to auditory stimuli from far advanced stations of these pathways, the auditory arcopallium in the forebrain and the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus in the midbrain, demonstrated that the representations of interaural time difference and frequency in the forebrain pathway differ from those in the midbrain pathway. Specifically, low-frequency representation was conserved in the forebrain pathway, while it was lost in the midbrain pathway. Variation of interaural time difference yielded symmetrical tuning curves in the midbrain pathway. By contrast, the typical forebraintuning curve was asymmetric with a steep slope crossing zero time difference and a less-steep slope toward larger contralateral time disparities. Low sound frequencies contributed sensitivity to contralateral leading sounds underlying these asymmetries, whereas high frequencies enhanced the steepness of slopes at small interaural time differences. Furthermore, the peaks of time-disparity tuning curves were wider in the forebrain than in the midbrain. The distribution of the steepest slopes of best interaural time differences in the auditory arcopallium, but not in the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus, was centered at zero time difference. The distribution observed in the auditory arocpallium is reminiscent of the situation observed in small mammals. We speculate that the forebrain representation may serve as a population code supporting fine discrimination of central interaural time differences and coarse indication of laterality of a stimulus for large interaural time differences.

Stimulus-locked temporal codes are increasingly seen as relevant to perception. The timing of action potentials typically varies with stimulus intensity, and the invariance of temporal representations with intensity is therefore an issue. We examine the timing of action potentials in cat auditory nerve to broadband noise presented at different intensities, using an analysis inspired by coincidence detection and by the binaural "latency hypothesis." It is known that the two cues for azimuthal sound localization, interaural intensity or level differences and interaural time differences (ITDs), interact perceptually. According to the latency hypothesis, the increase in intensity for the ear nearest to a sound source off the midline causes a decrease in response latency in that ear relative to the other ear. We found that changes in intensity cause small but systematic shifts in the ongoing timing of responses in the auditory nerve, generally but not always resulting in shorter delays between stimulus onset and neural response for increasing intensity. The size of the temporal shifts depends on characteristic frequency with a pattern indicating a fine-structure and an envelope response regime. Overall, the results show that ongoing timing is remarkably stable with intensity at the most peripheral neural level. The results are not consistent in a simple way with the latency hypothesis, but because of the acute sensitivity to ITDs, the subtle effects of intensity on timing may nevertheless have perceptual consequences.

Concurrent complex sounds (e.g., two voices speaking at once) are perceptually disentangled into separate "auditory objects". This neural processing often occurs in the presence of acoustic-signal distortions from noise and reverberation (e.g., in a busy restaurant). A difference in periodicity between sounds is a strong segregation cue under quiet, anechoic conditions. However, noise and reverberation exert differential effects on speech intelligibility under "cocktail-party" listening conditions. Previous neurophysiological studies have concentrated on understanding auditory scene analysis under ideal listening conditions. Here, we examine the effects of noise and reverberation on periodicity-based neural segregation of concurrent vowels /a/ and /i/, in the responses of single units in the guinea-pig ventral cochlear nucleus (VCN): the first processing station of the auditory brain stem. In line with human psychoacoustic data, we find reverberation significantly impairs segregation when vowels have an intonated pitch contour, but not when they are spoken on a monotone. In contrast, noise impairs segregation independent of intonation pattern. These results are informative for models of speech processing under ecologically valid listening conditions, where noise and reverberation abound.
