Correlation of Bone Textural Parameters with Age in the Context of Orthopedic X-ray Studies

Abstract: The aim of this study was to establish a relationship between the textural parameters observed in X-ray images of bones and the age of the individual. The study utilized a meticulous visual analysis of the images to identify significant correlations between textural features and age. Five distinct regions of interest, namely the Wing of the Ilium, Neck of the Femur, Greater Trochanter, Ischium, and Shaft of the Femur, were identified on both sides of the body. Textural parameters were then measured for each of… Show more

“…The objective of the research presented in [12] was to discern a link between textural characteristics discerned in X-ray skeletal images and the ages of the subjects. Through rigorous visual scrutiny of the images, the study sought correlations between textural attributes and chronological age.…”

“…Certain bone features, such as trabecular structure, are indistinguishable even to experienced observers like radiologists when examined by the human eye. However, these features can be highlighted through textural analyses [9]. Determining bone morphology, which reflects an individual's unique features, is crucial in forensic medicine and trauma management.…”

“…Radiological methods of determining bone age (BA) are the process of estimating chronological age (CA) by observing radiographic markers in the skeletal bones [1][2][3] of the pediatric population [4][5][6]. Classical methods of radiological BA determination are based on the detection of changes in morphological appearance by comparison with a reference Diagnostics 2023, 13, 3124 2 of 26 atlas of left anteroposterior hand-wrist radiographs such as the Greulich-Pyle Atlas (GPA) or Tanner-Whitehouse (TW) [7] method, or panoramic dental X-ray, such as Demirjian or FELS [6,[8][9][10][11][12].…”
