Correlations among Yield, Taste, Tuber Characteristics and Mineral Contents of Potato Cultivars Grown at Different Growing Conditions

Abstract: To test expected positive impact of organic cultivation on potato tubers quality and their mineral composition, selected potato cultivars were planted in conditions of two conventional and two organic farms in central and northern Poland in 2006. Lower tuber yield and elevated levels of quality traits (including tuber flavor) were characteristics of organic locations. Cultivar by location interaction significantly affected tuber flavor. The mineral composition of tubers reflects local variation in this respect… Show more

“…Moreover, high levels of K help to control high blood pressure and decrease the risk of stroke (Bethke and Jansky, 2008). The differences in some nutrient concentrations in the tubers, observed among the seven potato tested Cvs, not related to different soil fertilizations, are in agreement with those highlighted by numerous other studies (Bethke and Jansky, 2008;Flis et al, 2012), in which variations in element concentrations among tubers from different potato Cvs were observed. Since S. tuberosum is an important source of dietary nutrients, and in many parts of the world, it is consumed more than any other vegetable, the choice of the Cv that provides a major nutrient source could be an important aspect to take into account.…”

“…According to the data of the Food and Agriculture Organization of The United Nations, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most important plant cultivated in the world [Flis et al, 2012]. Solanum tuberosum L. is a valuable source of many compounds which are important in human diet [Leszczyński, 2000, White andothers., 2009].…”

“…The early-ripening potatoes received a score of 21.3. The varietal dependence of potato taste and the content of mineral substances in potato is given in paper [30]. Its authors studied 11 Polish varieties of potatoes (Bartek, Beata, Briza, Danusia, Maryna, Morse, Tokay, Triada, Viking, Zebra, Zeus) and three Dutch varieties (Asterix, Redstar, Victoria).…”
