Correlations Between Clinical Features and Mouth Opening in Patients With Systemic Sclerosis

Abstract: Objectives: This study aims to investigate the correlations between clinical features and mouth opening in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Patients and methods: Eighty patients with SSc (13 males, 67 females; mean age 53.4±11.7 years; range, 31 to 76 years) followed in our clinic were enrolled in the study. Skin involvement was assessed using the modified Rodnan skin score (mRSS), joint/tendon involvement with fingertip to palm (FTP) distance and interstitial lung disease (ILD) was evaluated with clini… Show more

“…The most factor associated SSc and oral manifestations together were the reduced mouth opening, which was caused by the sclerosis of skin and masticatory muscles. The extent of the mouth opening restriction was correlated with various variables, such as gender and disease severity[ 26 ]. It was certain that the restriction of mouth opening will affect the quality of lives of SSc patients mostly because of weakened eating abilities and the difficulties in oral hygiene maintenance[ 27 ].…”

“…reported a mean (SD) IID of 37.7 (8.4) mm in 163 Canadian SSc patients: Decreased IID was related to disease severity (assessed by physician global assessment) and mRSS [20]. In a recent cross‐sectional study of 80 patients with SSc, microstomia was associated with altered quality of life, female sex, high mRSS and occurrence of ILD [21]. Moreover, MO limitation was previously found associated with PAH.…”

“…Furthermore, it was significantly lower for the patients with ILD than for those without ILD (p = 0.006). Significant negative correlations were also noted between the ID and the mRSS and between the ID and the FTP distance (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001) [ 59 ]. SSc-related contraction of the perioral tissue with the resulting microstomia is related to a reduced quality of life because food intake is made considerably more difficult and oral hygiene cannot be adequately carried out.…”
