Corridors Construction and Development Strategies for Intangible Cultural Heritage: A Study about the Yangtze River Economic Belt

Tianxin Zhang,
Yuliang Yang,
Xin Fan
et al.

Abstract: At present, there is obvious regional segmentation in the protection of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. ArcGIS spatial analysis method and minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) models are used to investigate the distribution characteristics of ICH and the suitability of corridor construction in this region. On this basis, the strategies for heritage corridor construction are proposed. (1) The results show that the density and distribution of ICH in the Yangtze River Economi… Show more

“…Yet, the conservation of ICH in China still encounters a variety of controversy. In the context of rapid urbanisation, modernization and industrialization, ICH faces various challenges including the loss of its originality caused by excessive commercialization; the decreasing number of individuals inheriting ICH across generations; and the waning prevalence of traditional communication methods [16]. Then, the prevalence of a profit-oriented society and swift transformations in public life pose formidable obstacles to the sustainability, safeguarding, and transmission of ICH [17].…”

“…On the other hand, rural landscapes constitute complex landscape systems [11], requiring comprehensive planning and zonal controls due to the diverse element types and intricate spatial distribution characteristics they possess. Currently, many scholars focus on macro-corridor planning and micro-entity conservation centered around heritage sources, yet a systematic zoning protection method for rural landscape heritage has not been established [12][13][14][15][16]. To preserve the uniqueness and diversity of rural areas, maintain the spatial patterns and local culture, and support sustainable rural development, it is crucial to identify and zone the characteristics of rural landscape heritage systematically.…”

“…In recent years, major applications of GIS in China's cultural heritage protection have encompassed information management, protection platforms [11,12], visualization of archaeological data [13,14], and disaster risk assessment [15][16][17]. In addition, the development of GIS has provided new ideas for the protection of cultural heritage, and the research method involving analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution of cultural heritage using GIS technology has become a hotspot that is widely discussed by scholars [18][19][20][21]. For example, Liu Jing et al take the industry of modern cities as an entry point; they construct a GIS database and use kernel density analysis, mean center analysis, and other methods to study the spatial and temporal evolution and distribution of modern industry in China [8].…”
