Corticosteroid Therapy in Optic Neuropathy Secondary to Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Abstract: Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a tumor arising from the epithelial cells of the nasopharynx. NPC can spread and invade the base of skull, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, pterygopalatine fossa, and apex of the orbit. However, the involvement of the optic nerve in NPC is rare. The purpose of this case report is to report the efficacy of corticosteroid therapy in optic neuropathy secondary to NPC. Clinical case: A 56-year-old Chinese woman, an active smoker, presented with a hearing d… Show more

“…The mass effect of orbital invasion could cause dislocation of orbital content and related proptosis [15]. Furthermore, NPC could affect the orbital apex and lead to compressive optic neuropathy and cavernous sinus defect [28,29]. Because the NPC is frequently associated with orbital invasion which can contribute to mass effect and circulation impairment [14], we proposed that the existence of NPC may exaggerate the probability of glaucoma development especially OAG.…”

“…In severe cases, the proptosis may be associated with eyeball protrusion and restriction of extraocular muscle movement, which case surgery may be necessary [ 19 , 20 ]. Concerning the optic nerve, the mass effect of the NPC contributed to the compressive optic neuropathy and visual impairment [ 21 ]. About the infectious eye disease, the orbital cellulitis referred to both the inflammatory and infectious reaction in the orbit behind the orbital septum [ 22 ].…”

“…In certain cases, the growth of NPC-related tissue in the orbital region can lead to a compressive effect and associated optic neuropathy [15]. In such circumstances, visual acuity is severely and irreversibly impaired [21]. Regarding the relationship between NPC and inflammation, interleukin polymorphism was proposed as a risk factor for NPC [22], and inflammation in the sinonasal tract is correlated with subsequent NPC [23].…”
