Corticosteroids Modulate Angiogenic Soluble Factors in Ulcerative Colitis Patients

Abstract: VEGF, Ang1, and Ang2 levels showed statistically significant differences between UC patients and healthy controls. Although determination of PlGF serum levels before corticosteroid treatment might be helpful to anticipate the response by UC patients, no angiogenic pattern that could accurately predict "a priori" this response to corticosteroid treatment was observed. Corticosteroids altered temporarily circulating levels of VEGF, angiopoietins and Tie2. No correlation was found between systemic levels of angio… Show more

“…The relationship between RSV and PI3K/Akt has been investigated previously; for instance, RSV was found to downregulate the protein expression of PI3K/Akt, thus attenuating the progression of intestine ( Radwan and Karam, 2020 ). Moreover, upregulated levels of VEGFA have been documented in UC patients compared to normal controls ( Pousa et al, 2011 ). Similarly, RSV possesses the ability to inhibit the expression of CXCR4 by reducing the phosphorylation level of NF-κB, which brings about a reduction in VEGF secretion ( Seong et al, 2015 ).…”

“…In addition, VEGFA can influence physiology and tumor-induced angiogenesis, whereas elevated VEGFA gene expressions are associated with tumor progression, recurrence, and survival ( Andreozzi et al, 2014 ). More strikingly, UC patients are known to exhibit higher levels of VEGFA than normal controls ( Pousa et al, 2011 ). Consequently, the current study aimed to verify how RSV regulates the PI3K/Akt/VEGFA pathway to relieve UC.…”

“…); 4) full text is not available and the abstract contains not enough data (ie, describes “IBD” without a specification for CD or UC); 5) cytokines under study are not in our list; or 6) the paper describes cytokine levels before/after certain treatment and contains no control group. The ultimate data contained 236 contributions on cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors derived from 89 research papers 711,29…”

“…Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, contributes to the neoplastic process and plays a role in the pathology of IBD (33). 5-ASA (mesalamine), a drug often used to treat IBD, in addition to effects of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, can alter the balance between angiogenic and antiangiogenic factors (32,43). In this study we examined the impact of modulation of the microflora on levels of the angiogenic factor VEGF and the antiangiogenic factors endostatin and angiostatin.…”
