Corticotomy-/Osteotomy-assisted Tooth Movement microCTs Differ

Abstract: Corticotomy-assisted and osteotomy-assisted tooth movement involves surgical incisions through the alveolar bone. To ascertain whether teeth move by distraction osteogenesis or by regional accelerated phenomenon (RAP), we randomly assigned 30 Sprague-Dawley rats to one of 5 experimental groups: corticotomy alone, corticotomy-assisted tooth movement, osteotomy alone, osteotomy-assisted tooth movement, or tooth movement alone. Each animal was imaged by microtomography immediately after surgery, after 21 days, an… Show more

“…Decreases in bone volume fraction and density have been shown to be associated with the RAP effect to varying degrees. 69,86,88 A flapless piezocision experiment in the beagle maxilla by Ruso et al shows a similar trend in changes in the medullary bone regarding bone volume fraction and material density compared to the present study. 89 While the material density of the bone in the present study was less on the experimental side compared to the control side it was not statistically significant.…”

“…This orthodontic phase typically occurs in the regional acceleratory phenomenon's effective time frame, enabling the facilitated tooth movement. Recently, Lee et al 31 investigated the pattern of accelerated tooth movement in 3 orthodontic therapy protocols in animal models: orthodontic tooth movement with no surgical intervention, treatment combined with a perisegmental linear corticotomy, and treatment combined with an anterior segmental osteotomy. They reported that the regional acceleratory phenomenon was observed only in the corticotomy-treated group, and a distraction osteogenesis effect was observed in the anterior segmental osteotomy-treated group.…”

“…Lee et al 29 and Sebaoun et al 30 reported systemic and histological evidence supporting the theory that enhancement of tooth movement after ACS is due to an increase in the phenomenon of demineralization and remineralization observed in bone turnover. Results reported for rats showed a threefold increase in anabolic and catabolic processes up to 21 days after performance of ACS, showing that the effects on trabecular bone were both intensive and extensive.…”
