“…However, at exsanguination, significantly higher levels of plasma lactate and glucose, serum muscle enzymes and haematological variables, than at the preslaughter period, might partially be attributed to stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, caused by stunning and bleeding (Mitchell et al, 1988;Shaw and Tume, 1992;Werner and Gallo, 2008). Plasma catecholamine concentrations have not been measured in the present study; however, their increased concentration after stunning have been found in horses, cattle and lambs (Mitchell et al, 1988;Linares et al, 2008;Micera et al, 2010).…”

“…Blood samples were taken by trained personnel by external jugular venipuncture according to Linares et al (2008) at three different times. The first sample used to determine the basal blood parameter concentrations several sheep breeds [Tadich et al (2009) in the Corriedale breed; Miranda-de la Lama et al (2010aLama et al ( , 2012 in the Rasa Aragonesa breed; De la Fuente et al (2010Fuente et al ( , 2012 in the Assaf breed].…”

The measurement of plasma constituents in a blood sample can provide information about the stress of the animal during the various management operations (Shaw and Tume, 1992).…”

“…Samples were taken by trained personnel by external jugular venipuncture at three different times according to Linares et al (2008): the first blood sample was taken on the farm in resting conditions, (in order to determine the basal blood parameter levels); a second blood sample was taken after transport (immediately after unloading) and another sample was colleted after lairage. Approximately 20 s were necessary for each extraction, using a 0.8 × 25 mm bevelled needle (Terumo Neolus, Belgium), 5 ml syringe (BD Discardit™, Spain) and 1 ml tubes containing EDTA (Ethylene Diaminotetraacetic Acid) for haematology determination and 4 ml tubes without additive for hormonal and biochemical parameter concentration measurements.…”
