Cosmeceutical peptides

Abstract: Peptide cosmeceuticals are one of the new, popular options to treat aging skin. There are three main categories of cosmeceutical peptides: signal peptides, neurotransmitter-affecting peptides and carrier peptides. Although their benefits currently may not be as rigorously tested as most FDA-regulated drugs, the evidence to support their use is growing. This article attempts to review the various current popular cosmeceutical peptides, the published studies on their theoretical effects, and their practical use … Show more

“…The sugar moisturizing factor is a carbohydrate complex similar to that contained in the skin, which acts by binding to the lysine amino acid residues exposed by the keratins, attracting water [15] and providing deep and lasting hydration, contributing to maintaining the skin barrier's functionality.…”

“…Wrinkle formation is one of the primary characteristics of skin aging; the major cause of fine wrinkles is the loss of structural protein (type I collagen) in the dermal layer of skin [72]. Elastase is a metalloproteinase involved in the degradation of elastin in skin aging and the inhibition or the repair of wrinkle formation while matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are induced by collagen and elastin degradation.…”

“…The final pathway to all of the mechanisms of aging is apparently the same and involves disruption of the network of collagen and elastin [71]. Anti-aging cosmeceuticals are, therefore, designed to repair and/or maintain the body's maintenance and repair systems (MRSs) [72]. Antioxidants play a large role in the MRSs.…”
