“…Cosmid clone JAB8 (cJAB8; Ferretti et al, 1997) was used as a cattle chromosome 7 (BTA7)-specific DNA probe, since it produces a strong FISH signal at the sub-centromeric region of BTA7. The application of this probe, however, required suppression hybridisation of repetitive sequences, which precluded its combinatorial use with pericentromeric or telomeric DNA probes.…”

“…All loci mapped on homoeologous chromosomes and chromosome regions in the two species (Table 1), confirming the high degree of similarity between the autosomes of bovids (Hayes et al, 1991;Gallagher and Womack et al, 1992;Iannuzzi and Di Meo, 1995), and further supporting the hypothesis that banding pattern similarities indicate conservation of genome organization. Small discrepancies in the localization of some loci on different chromosome bands of sheep, river buffalo and cattle may result from technical problems such as different banding techniques applied in cattle (Q-banding, Mezzelani et al, 1995;Ferretti et al, 1997) and in the present study (R-banding), as well as from different banded ideograms adopted in cattle (Mezzelani et al, 1995;Ferretti et al, 1997), in sheep (ISCNDB 2000) and in river buffalo (CSKBB 1994).…”

“…In this study, 28 bovine cosmids from 19 bovine syntenic groups (U), three of which contain type I loci and 25 which contain microsatellites, previously assigned to cattle chromosomes (Mezzelani et al, 1995;Ferretti et al 1997), were com- paratively FISH-mapped to sheep and river buffalo R-banded chromosomes (13 loci for the first time), thus significantly extending the physical maps of these two species.…”
