“…Secondly, the generation of cough is regulated not only by chemical sensory inputs, through C‐fiber receptors, but also by mechanical sensory inputs, through rapidly adapting mechanoreceptors . Also external mechanical stimulation of the trachea is be able to induce cough, in healthy individuals and also in patients with cough as a leading symptom . Therefore a continuous external mechanical stimulation, similar to that induced by an aberrant innominate artery, may contribute not only to induce cough by itself, but also to modify cough response generated by other stimuli.…”

“…35 Also external mechanical stimulation of the trachea is be able to induce cough, in healthy individuals 36 and also in patients with cough as a leading symptom. 37 Therefore a continuous external mechanical stimulation, similar to that induced by an aberrant innominate artery, may contribute not only to induce cough by itself, but also to modify cough response generated by other stimuli. Cough easily induced by different etiologic agents, lasting for a long time, was the characteristic symptom of our patients with AIA-induced TC.…”

“…Using modified shaver to vibrate, Lee and Eccles induced cough in patients with acute upper respiratory tract infection and, much lesser extent, in healthy subjects [7]. Using tuning fork, Kamimura et al induced cough and itchy sensation in respectively 37% and 50% of respiratory patients with cough as a leading symptoms such as acute upper respiratory tract infection, bronchial asthma, cough variant asthma and acute bronchitis [8]. In the present study, tracheal vibration by tuning fork failed to induce cough in healthy adults, suggesting that the capability to induce cough depends on the degree of inflammation and the method of vibration such as intensity, duration and frequency.…”

“…In addition, external mechanical vibration of chest wall induced cough in patients with acute upper respiratory tract infection [5] and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis [6]. External mechanical vibration of cervical trachea also induced cough in healthy adults, patients with acute upper respiratory tract infection [7,8], and respiratory patients with cough as a leading symptom [8]. …”

“…In addition, the increase in chronic inflammation results in remodeling, such as smooth-muscle hypertrophy, hyperplasia in the glandular mucosa, vascular proliferation, and basement membrane thickening (1,2). Although bronchial asthma and cough-variant asthma were thought to be due to bronchial inflammation, inflammation in the trachea also had to be taken into account (3,4). Inhaled steroids are the first-choice treatment for achieving long-term control of asthma and preventing asthma-induced remodeling (1,5,6).…”
