Could platelet indices have diagnostic properties in children with COVID‐19?

Abstract: Introduction Viral infections are often accompanied by reactive thrombocytosis, that is, increased activity of platelets, which is especially common in infants and children. Objective This study aimed to test the diagnostic properties of platelet indices, plateletcrit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW), in children with beta corona virus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) infection. Methods The study included 232 patients below the age of 18 admitted to the coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) isola… Show more

“…Machine learning methods have the ability to extract important variables from large datasets, which is crucial for classification into groups, that is, decision‐making. Important independent diagnostic features in COVID‐19 have been confirmed in numerous studies, with some of them being: WBC, NEU#, LYM#, MPV, PDW, and CRP 16–20 . In this study, the independent COVID‐19 predictors were shown to be the following: RDW, MPV, PDW, BASO#, MLR, and NMR.…”

However, in decision‐making, the following variables were significant for construction of the random forest model: HCT, LYM#, CRP, SII, WBC, MONO#, BASO#, MCHC, RDW, and NEU#.…”

“…PDW и PCT -тромбоцитарные показатели, характеризующие распределение тромбоцитов по размеру и тромбокрит соответственно. Повышенные значения данных показателей могут указывать на усиленную деструкцию и в то же время на образование новых молодых и функционально более активных тромбоцитов, поскольку воспалительные реакции острой фазы приводят к мегакариопоэзу [33].…”

“…Th early recognition of SARS-CoV-2 infection remains a diagnostic challenge, especially in pediatrics. In order to begin treatment and prevent the spread of infection, it is necessary to identify positive patients as quickly as possible [11,12]. With the development of information technologies, the possibilities for the application of intelligent software systems in disease diagnosis and patient triage increase [8,9].…”
