Could Spindle Cell Lung Carcinoma be Considered and Treated as Sarcoma, According to its Clinical Course, Morphology, Immunophenotype and Genetic Finding?

Abstract: The actual nature of spindle cell carcinoma has been debated extensively because of its rarity. It carries a poor prognosis, even when early-stage disease is diagnosed and resected. In view of the rarity and the significance of the histological diagnosis, we report a patient with rapidly progressing spindle cell lung carcinoma with soft tissue metastasis. Diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry finding. Analysis of the TP53 gene mutations by polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing revealed inserti… Show more

“…All forms of SC have a low incidence, and PSCC is very rare, accounting for only 0.2% to 0.3% of all lung cancers. [6] We reviewed the PSCC case reports published in English, [4,611] and our present case, and summarized the clinical features of PSCC (Table 1). A total of 11 cases were analyzed, including 6 men and 5 women.…”

“…The present case showed a big tumor, the inside of which consisted of a low-density area with indistinct border to pleural effusion in CE-CT, which was found to be abundant hemorrhage in autopsy. Several case reports of SPCC also present low-density areas within the tumors ( Table 1 ) [ 2 , 4 6 ]. Also, in several cases, though low-density areas in CT were not described, specimens obtained by operation or autopsy showed hemorrhage and/or necrosis within the tumor [ 7 9 ].…”

“…In addition, sarcomatoid carcinoma is frequently reported to show areas of hemorrhage and necrosis, and occasionally shows cavitation [ 1 , 3 ]. Also, most sarcomatoid carcinomas arise peripherally and rapidly progress to aggressively invade adjacent structures such as the chest wall or the pleura [ 2 , 3 , 10 , 12 ].…”

“…Прогнозирование верете-ноклеточного рака лёгкого может определяться саркомоподобным компонентом опухоли. Осно-вываясь на этом, стратегии для лечения сарком мягких тканей можно применять также в случае веретеноклеточной опухоли, в частности из-за её быстрого роста, несмотря на присутствую-щее надлежащее онкологическое лечение [12].…”
