Could the COVID-19-Driven Increased Use of Ivermectin Lead to Incidents of Imbalanced Gut Microbiota and Dysbiosis?

Abstract: The microfilaricidal anthelmintic drug ivermectin (IVM) has been used since 1988 for treatment of parasitic infections in animals and humans. The discovery of IVM’s ability to inactivate the eukaryotic importin α/β1 heterodimer (IMPα/β1), used by some viruses to enter the nucleus of susceptible hosts, led to the suggestion of using the drug to combat SARS-CoV-2 infection. Since IVM has antibacterial properties, prolonged use may affect commensal gut microbiota. In this review, we investigate the antimicrobial … Show more

“…Syphacia obvelata is an internal parasite occasionally observed in chinchillas and ivermectin is a clinical treatment for the disease. However, ivermectin has antibacterial properties, which may lead to gastrointestinal disease by causing dysbacteriosis [ 8 , 11 ], so figuring out the influence of ivermectin on the gut microbiota of chinchillas is important.…”

“…Ivermectin is an antiparasitic, commonly used for controlling parasitic infestation in chinchillas by its oral or injectable formulation [ 3 , 9 , 10 ]. However, since it has antibacterial properties [ 11 ], the treatment of ivermectin may lead to the imbalance of gut microbiota, and that may promote the emergence and development of diseases [ 5 , 6 , 8 ]. A previous study found that combinative administration of fenbendazole and ivermectin tablets disturbed the homeostasis of gut microbiota and metabolism in Amur tiger [ 12 ].…”

“…Furthermore, these tests were all performed in vivo, which makes it impossible to elucidate the effect of IVM on the gut microbiota specifically, as it is well known that the mammalian and microbial cells interact metabolically [30]. To date, an investigation of IVM's effect on the gut microbial community of healthy individuals has not been conducted [31], even though such studies could provide important safety information for those considering re-purposing IVM for alternative applications in which the subjects are not also infected with helminths.…”
