Coupled response of rainfall and denitrification to solar forcing during the Holocene in Alfonso Basin.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The bulk sedimentary δ15 N record of Alfonso Basin displayed changes both from a regional source possibly associated with changes in the isotopic signal of NO 3 -dissolved in Subsurface Subtropical Water and from a climate source governed by solar forcing (total solar irradiance) over the strength of the North American monsoon (i.e., rainfall), causing intermediate water suboxia and promoting denitrification in the basin. High values of bulk sedimentary δ 15 N (maximum of 14.5‰) agree with increases … Show more

“…Most of the biogeochemical processes such as ammonium volatilization, nitrification, denitrification, ammonification, and N assimilation alter the concentration, chemical form, and/or isotopic compostion of N in the water column (Valiela et al 1997, Kendall and Cadwell 1998, McClelland and Valiela 1998, Ricaurte-Villota et al 2013. Based on the spatial and temporal variations of T, S, pH, and DO, and the chemical forms of N in the system, we suggest that the processes that have most impact are ammonium volatilization and denitrification.…”

“…Oceanographic conditions in the tropical northwestern Pacific respond with different frequency and intensity to the variability of tropical weather events (Barron et al 2003, Goni et al 2006, Barron and Bukry 2007, Flores-Trujillo et al 2009, Staines-Urías et al 2009, Marchitto et al 2010, Pérez-Cruz 2013, Ricaurte-Villota et al 2013. The variability of marine productivity in the northwestern Pacific during the Holocene has been linked to the following: (1) the position of the subtropical high pressure system (e.g., Goni et al 2006, Pérez-Cruz 2013; (2) the relative position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the North American Monsoon (e.g., Goni et al 2006, Staines-Urías et al 2009, Pérez-Cruz 2013, Ricaurte-Villota et al 2013; and (3) solar activity, an exogenous factor responsible for El Niño/La Niña-like atmospheric and oceanographic conditions (e.g., Marchitto et al 2010).…”
