Coupling and confinement of current in thermoacoustic phased arrays

Abstract: When a medium is rapidly heated and cooled, heat transfers to its surroundings as sound. A controllable source of this sound is realized through joule heating of thin, conductive films by an alternating current. Here, we show that arrays of these sources generate sound unique to this mechanism. From the sound alone, we spatially resolve current flow by varying the film geometry and electrical phase. Confinement concentrates heat to such a degree that the film properties become largely irrelevant. Elect… Show more

“…To date, the majority of thermophone research has focused on addressing the relatively poor conversion efficiency of source power into sound [3][4][5]. However, for many potential applications this efficiency is irrelevant: the distinctive mechanism of sound production has been shown to already have use in non-destructive evaluation [6], active noise cancellation [7], signal heterodyning [2], and ultrasonic phased arrays [8].…”

“…In this regard, other phenomena such as conduction [13], harvesting [14], signal translation and transductions, [15] encryption [16] of different modes of energy [17] are studied. Within these functions are involved physical and chemical properties such as thermal [18], electronic [19], photonics [20], quantum [21], and luminescence mechanism [22]. In this context, it is noted that semiconductor materials are related to the dual properties of conductors, such as copper, and insulators, such as glass, depending on their intrinsic electronic constitutions and media.…”

“…Based on the complex system theory, various mitigation theories were discussed by Sujith [14]. Tantell [15] investigated the coupling and controlling of current thermoacoustic staged clusters. The work discussed that clusters of these sources produce sound special to this instrument.…”
