Coverage analysis of Scopus: A journal metric approach

Abstract: Our aim is to compare the coverage of the Scopus database with that of Ulrich, to determine just how homogenous it is in the academic world. The variables taken into account were subject distribution, geographical distribution, distribution by publishers and the language of publication. The analysis of the coverage of a product of this nature should be done in relation to an accepted model, the optimal choice being Ulrich's Directory, considered the international point of reference for the most comprehensive i… Show more

“…The articles were taken from a single year to allow efficient comparisons and 2012 was selected to be recent enough to attract social web mentions and old enough to attract citations. Scopus was chosen because it is more comprehensive than the Web of Science (WoS), especially from an international perspective (Leydesdorff et al 2010;Moed and Visser 2008;Moya-Anegón et al 2007). Spanish scientific production also seems to be broader and better represented in Scopus than in WoS ).…”

Information visualization emerged at the beginning of this century as a discipline of great interest at the crossroads of bibliometrics and scientometrics, providing multiple visual representations known as scientograms (Moya-Anegón et al, 2007a). These maps of science can facilitate understanding of a scientific domain by depicting the structure of research output.…”

“…In 2004, the publishing company Elsevier introduced Scopus, which claims to be the largest abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources, covering nearly 18 000 titles from more than 5 000 publishers (Scopus, no date). Scopus compares well with other citation databases such as Web of Science and Google Scholar, offering a wealth of data when the citation period is limited to 1996 and onwards (Bar-Ilan, 2010;De Moya-Anegón, Chinchilla-Rodríguez et al, 2007).…”
