COVID-19 and Nanoscience in the Developing World: Rapid Detection and Remediation in Wastewater

Abstract: Given the known presence of SARS-Cov-2 in wastewater, stemming disease spread in global regions where untreated effluent in the environment is common will experience additional pressure. Though development and preliminary trials of a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 have been launched in several countries, rapid and effective alternative tools for the timely detection and remediation of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, especially in the developing countries, is of paramount importance. Here, we propose a promising, non-inv… Show more

“…), and biological pollutants. Recently, nanotechnological approach for wastewater treatment using adsorption and photocatalytic technology has attained tremendous attention owing to its eco‐friendliness, sustainability, cost‐effectiveness, and other effective properties [ 130 ]. Among nanomaterials, TiO 2 ‐based nanomaterials have achieved the core importance because of their unique physical and chemical features, remarkable biocompatibility, strong oxidation, and maximal photocatalytic properties [ 131 , 132 ].…”

“…Wastewater can potentially lead to a resurgence of coronavirus, but there are potential unknown sources that might lead to the resurgence of the virus in the future. An integrated approach that involves nanoscience and facilitates the early detection of the coronavirus is reported by Adeel et al ( 2021 ). The study described the development of the gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric system which can allow the detection of SARS-CoV- 2 with “naked eye’”.…”
