Impact of cash flow volatility and debt structure in context of COVID pandemic: A study in Vietnam

The study examines the impact of cash flow volatility on the debt structure of listed enterprises in Vietnam in period from 2009 to 2020. We use general least square method and percentile regression to examine this impact. Research results show that there exists an inverse relationship between cash flow volatility and corporate debt structure (financial leverage, short-term debt and long-term debt) of Vietnamese enterprises during the research period. In particular, unlike previous studies on cash flow volatility, this study further examines impact of the COVID pandemic on the relationship between cash flow volatility and debt structure. The test results show that cash flow volatility in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic has an positive impact on debt structure. At the same time, the study also finds that the cash flow volatility will decrease as the percentile of the debt structure increases.

This study aims to examine the effect of COVID-19, exchange rate and Ramadan month effect on stock market returns in consumer goods industry firm listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2020. The sampling method used in this study is purposive sampling with predetermined criteria. The result of this study shows that COVID-19 that is proxied by daily death case, exchange rate and Ramadan month effect have no effect on stock market returns. COVID-19 that is proxied by daily recovered case have positive effect on stock market returns.

The article examines the impact of cash flow on the need to increase funding in the Covid pandemic context and the financial constraints of listed companies in Vietnam. We build hypotheses based on the self-ranking match theory framework and research overview. We use data from 5894 observations for 2010-2020 and the general regression model -GLS to test the expected hypotheses. The research results show that cash flow significantly influences the external financing needs of the business. In particular, the cash flow impact and increased need for external financing are more evident in financial constraints and the context of the covid pandemic. The study also shows that the group of companies with financial constraints moved to increase funding when cash flow was in short supply during the Covid pandemic. Besides, the high financial leverage ratio in the previous year can be one of the barriers for businesses that want to access a variety of external financing. The study contributes to the analysis and assessment of the problematic situation of listed companies. In the future, this study can be extended when approaching businesses in the financial sector and evaluating other macro factors that can affect the capital sources of enterprises.
