Cracking Behavior of UHPC Slabs

Abstract: The combination of fibers with traditional reinforcement may be a very interesting design solution to achieve more durable and economical structures. In this study, a total of seven slabs; six ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) slabs and one normal strength concrete slab were tested previously by the Author to observe the crack spacing and number of cracks in tension area, crack width and absorbed energy. Four slabs of UHPC with steel fiber of 0.5%, one UHPC slab with 1.1% steel fiber and one slab of UHPC … Show more

“…The drop panels with appropriate thickness are active in decreasing the shearing stresses where the column is liable to punch through the slab, also provide an enhanced moment of resistance where the negative moments are highest and stiffen the slab and hence decrease deflection. [15]. Besides, if the drop is provided in a flat slab system, then d/2 distance is considered from face of the drop of the column, as shown in Figure 2.…”

“…The experimental program was made by the author [1] on G1Ufib0.5 slab (UHPC slab with 0.5% steel fiber) to study the punching shear behavior of UHPC flat slabs. This test was done in structural engineering department in Kassel University / Germany.…”

“…Major reasons for this are the difficulty of observing the dispersion and orientation of fibers within a concrete or mortar matrix and the current absence of technology to control their dispersion and orientation during placing. With this as a background, this study attempted to visualize fibers in concrete specimens by using John Long method to calculate the fiber dispersion and orientation on the failure plane of flat slab under punching load previously tested by the Author [1].…”

“…Based on the latest developments in concrete technology, UHPC is characterized by extraordinary mechanical properties in terms of high compressive and tensile strengths, high Young's modulus, and excellent durability and workability when compared with normal or high-strength concrete. Using steel fibers is recommended in the UHPC mix design to enhance ductility [1,2]. UHPC with high compressive strength and improved workability and durability mark a quantum leap in concrete technology.…”
