Creatine as an antioxidant

Abstract: Creatine monohydrate (Cr), the most diffuse supplement in the sports industry, is receiving greater attention because of its beneficial effects in a wide number of human degenerative diseases and conditions. These effects can be barely explained on the basis of the sole ergogenic role of the Cr/CrP system. Indeed, a wide number of research articles indicate that Cr is capable of exerting multiple, non-energy related, effects on diverse and relevant cellular targets. Among these effects, the antioxidant activit… Show more

“…In postmortem muscles, depletion of ATP due to anoxia leads to the utilization of phosphocreatine to produce ATP and creatine. Previous studies have indicated that creatine can also act as an antioxidant by scavenging the free radicals (Sestili et al, 2011;Lawler et al, 2002). Creatine kinase M-type was more abundant (P < 0.05) in LL and ST, and these muscles had better color stability compared to PM.…”

“…Creatine phosphate is utilized for the production of ATP with concomitant production of creatine in postmortem skeletal muscles. Previous research indicated that creatine has antioxidant properties (Sestili et al, 2011;Lawler et al, 2002), which could be beneficial to minimize myoglobin oxidation in fresh meat. In the present study, 2 spots identified as creatine kinase were more abundant in color-stable OSM21, which indicated the antioxidant effect of this protein in fresh beef.…”

“…8 Recently, several articles have indicated the various effects of creatine including cytoprotective features through antioxidant-like effect, mitochondrial genome stabilization and decrease in oxygen consumption besides its ergogenic role. 9 Pioglitazone is an anti-diabetic drug that belongs to thiazolidinediones and acts as an agonist of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARg). Along with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, pioglitazone has been reported to have protective effects on cerebral, myocardial and renal ischemia.…”
