This article deals with how welfare organisations address challenges to foster public places that are capable of accommodating sustainable development. The overall aim of the study is to increase our understanding of the innovative states of mind among employees in rural welfare organisations, guiding how they forge places for the provision of legitimate sustainable welfare. Data were collected through ethnographic field studies in a public housing company in a rural municipality in southern Sweden. As we investigate the daily making and shaping of place in a rural public housing company, assigned to provide sustainable welfare, we will set out to analyse how employees act to create legitimate forms of sustainable welfare. Our unit of analysis concerns employees’ innovative state of mind as they engage in identifying placemaking activities recognised as able to provide appropriate contributions to sustainable everyday life for the rural population. The results show nuances due to place, forming patterns in the innovative states of mind that guide the property managers’ actions as they create legitimate, sustainable welfare in rural settings. The findings further suggest that placemaking, the daily making and shaping of places, in welfare organisations may sustain existing recognition of rural areas as peripheries or deprioritised places, reproducing a distinction between centre and periphery.

This article explores the contemporary shift in urban studies towards prioritizing walkable neighborhoods amidst growing concerns about urban sprawl and its environmental impacts. Focusing on Persiaran Bestari in Shah Alam, Malaysia, the research aims to address the lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and the consequent reliance on vehicular transport in residential areas. This research utilizes a mixed-method approach incorporating quantitative and qualitative methodologies, combining space syntax analysis and behavioral mapping to examine pedestrian movement within the study area. The data collection involves gathering pedestrian infrastructure data through field surveys and pedestrian volume surveys. As the result, behavioral mapping observations revealed varying pedestrian activity levels along different road corridors, with significant pedestrian traffic concentrated around residential zones. Utilizing space syntax analysis, the research detected that Persiaran Bestari and Permai experienced the highest levels of social and commercial activity, indicating higher resident density in these areas. This research highlights the correlation between pedestrian comfort and safety and the availability of pedestrian infrastructure. It reveals that inadequate infrastructure leads to poor walkability, prompting pedestrians to favor safer routes, such as neighborhood or local roads with reduced and slower vehicle traffic.

Although extensive research has investigated urban vibrancy as a critical indicator for spatial planning, urban design, and economic development, the unclear relationship between local vibrancy and active living needs to be clarified and requires more in-depth analysis. This study localizes urban vibrancy at both hyper-local and neighborhood scales by integrating high-resolution, large-scale, and heterogeneous urban datasets and analyzing interactions among variables representing vibrancy’s environmental, economic, and social aspects. We utilize publicly available urban open data, Points of Interest requested from API, and leisure running trajectories acquired through data mining to investigate the spatial distribution of various vibrancy indicators and how they interact with physical activity at the local scale. Based on these variables, we then construct linear regression models and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) models to test and estimate how local vibrancy and physical activity relate to residential real estate characteristics. The results reveal the strong impact of urban form on local vibrancy but not physical activeness. At the neighborhood level, all vibrancy factors are statistically significant to local residential real estate prices but with different interactions based on location. Our study highlights the importance of accounting for locality and different physical, environmental, social, and economic factors when analyzing and interpreting urban vibrancy at a granular scale within a city.
