Creation and Fundamental Characteristic of a New Friction Joining Method

Abstract: The endless hot rolling concept was introduced to meet the demand for diverse hot-rolled steel sheet products produced by a cost-effective process compared with the conventional batch-type process. Endless rolling involves joining the head and tail ends of two bars following their rough rolling. Previously, induction welding and laser welding have been employed in a hot mill line, nevertheless, these joining methods require a longer line space because of the long welding time. By applying solid-state joining u… Show more

“…133,134) In addition, the endless hot strip rolling mills were operated newly, and as for joining technology of a rough bar which was a key technology, the friction welding technology using strong shear deformation was developed. 135) There are an induction welding technology and a laser welding technology except this technology for the joining technology. These three joining technologies became ones developed in Japan.…”

“…However, continuous rolling has not been applied to high tensile strength steel because of a lack of joint strength. In addition to the induction heating method, laser welding methods 2) and shear joining methods [3][4][5] can also be used as hot-rolled sheet bar joining techniques, but no examples of the application of either method to high tensile strength steel have been reported.…”
