Due to the growing popularization of digital books, the project intended to develop a web tutorial for people interested in editing e-book-acquainted or not with accessible ePUB e-book production. Therefore, we aimed at a studying about ePUB specification as well as developing a proof of concept on how to build a formatted book, including accessibility elements. A small collection of papers was selected about e-books and accessibility to support the study. Tutorials and ePUB building tools were also selected. The project was interrupted on May 2017 before the web tutorial due to author's personal matters.

Authoring tools are software programs that allow users to create learning content, lessons, and courses, usually to be used in virtual learning environments. These tools are a reasonable choice for novice users, as they use pre-programmed elements and do not require specific programming skills. However, they do not always meet accessibility guidelines, nor do they ensure that the educational content generated through them is accessible. This study first evaluates the accessibility of four popular free open-source authoring tools based on the ATAG recommendations. Then it evaluates the accessibility of the educational content generated through them based on the WCAG recommendations. These evaluations allow us to identify the level of accessibility of the authoring tools and their potential to help people with disabilities to become not only consumers but also producers of accessible educational content. We conclude that, while much work remains to be done to ensure accessibility, authoring tools are a potential key to effective social inclusion. Based on the findings of this study, we establish a set of recommendations for stakeholders to help close some gaps regarding accessibility.

Access to research papers has changed in the last decades: from printed to digital sources, from close to open access. Despite these changes and broader access to research results, there are still accessibility barriers. A very few number of conferences and journals state an accessibility policy of their publications in their websites. The production of accessible documents is not a common practice in conferences devoted to accessibility. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present the case study of DSAI 2016 (Software Development and Technologies for Enhancing Accessibility and Fighting Infoexclusion) conference, wherein we were in charge of making accessible its proceedings. Methods: We discuss the methods and technical procedures we carried out to turn the original articles in MS Word and Latex formats into accessible PDFs and the steps necessary in authoring, conversion and validation. Results: the papers of DSAI 2016 were published in accessible format after much effort, best tools and procedure were using MS Word plus PDF Axes plus PDF Accessibility checker. Conclusion: We state the need to include a new role in the organizing committee of conferences for dealing with accessible publishing.
