Creative-dynamic image synthesis: a useful addition to the treatment options for impotence

Abstract: In contrast to the impressive advances made in somatic research on erectile dysfunction, psychogenic erectile dysfunction is usually treated as a monolithic block. In this study, we evaluated the erectogenic power of creative-dynamic image synthesis in men with psychogenic erectile dysfunction. Sixty-nine men with a mean age of 46 y, suffering from erectile dysfunction of no known organic cause, were entered in a placebo-controlled study in which the erectogenic power of imagination, yohimbine and a placebo we… Show more

“…SD can derive from a simultaneous, or more often a stepwise, perturbation of all the aforementioned domains, having negative effects on mood, general well-being, interpersonal relationships, and therefore on psychosocial functioning. In the male, isolated episodes of insufficient erection at an inopportune time are so common that they are almost a universal occurrence; however, in some circumstances they can be iterative and originate a vicious cycle, through the so-called performance anxiety [3]. Performance anxiety is the most common psychological disturbance in male subjects with SD [4].…”

“…Our experience strongly suggests that all these factors mutually and systematically interact in determining ED (Corona et al, 2004a). In fact, once a patient experiences ED (from primitive organic, marital or intrapsychic causes), further attempts at sexual contact might produce, or reinforce, anxiety which, in turn, further contributes to ED (Sachs, 2000;Sommer et al, 2001;Carosa et al, 2002;Sachs, 2003). This ED-based vicious cycle of failure and escalating anxiety affects not only the patient but also the patient's partner (too old for him to desire her, fear about his fidelity, etc), reinforcing or causing marital problems (Hedon, 2003).…”

“…Sexual problems were perceived as a personality disorder and so the most suitable form of treatment was the Freudian-style psychoanalysis, focusing on routes of sexual conflict in the patient's early life (Freud, 1953). In the late 1950s and 1960s modern behavioural treatment was established, focusing on systematic desensitization of the patient's current anxiety (Sommer et al, 2001). In 1970, Master and Johnson (Master & Johnson, 1970) developed their psycho-educational model which was a unique combination of behavioural, psychotherapeutic and educational elements.…”

“…49 Measures of potency were found to improve more with CDIS than with yohimbine or placebo. Based on this study claim 'creative-dynamic image synthesis is a potent initiator of erections in men with psychogenic erectile dysfunction, has no known side effects and is very cost-effective' Phase III studies and preparation of an NDA are the obvious next steps.…”
