A strategy using bacilli was adopted aiming to investigate the mitigation of the effects of water deficit in sesame. An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with 2 sesame cultivars (BRS Seda and BRS Anahí) and 4 inoculants (pant001, ESA 13, ESA 402, and ESA 441). On the 30th day of the cycle, irrigation was suspended for eight days, and the plants were subjected to physiological analysis using an infrared gas analyzer (IRGA). On the 8th day of water suspension, leaves were collected for analysis: superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, proline, nitrogen, chlorophyll, and carotenoids. At the end of the crop cycle, data on biomass and vegetative growth characteristics were collected. Data were submitted for variance analysis and comparison of means by the Tukey and Shapiro–Wilk tests. A positive effect of inoculants was observed for all characteristics evaluated, contributing to improvements in plant physiology, induction of biochemical responses, vegetative development, and productivity. ESA 13 established better interaction with the BRS Anahí cultivar and ESA 402 with BRS Seda, with an increase of 49% and 34%, respectively, for the mass of one thousand seeds. Thus, biological indicators are identified regarding the potential of inoculants for application in sesame cultivation.

In agricultural experimentation, the use of adequate plot size and shape is an important experimental technique to increase the precision of the experiment. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the appropriate size and shape of the plot for field experimentation with sesame. For this, the experiment was conducted in randomized complete blocks with 14 sesame cultivars in four replicates. The plots were composed of four 0.8-meter-long rows, at spacing of 0.6 m between rows and 0.1 m between plants. The plot area (0.72 m2), composed of the two central rows, was divided into 12 basic units, each constituted by one plant in the row (0.06 m2), to obtain the seed yield of sesame. The convenient size of the experimental plot was estimated by the Hatheway’s method and its adequate shape was determined by the relative information method. The Hatheway’s method allowed the estimation of several convenient plot sizes, many of sizes applicable for sesame cultivar evaluation experiments. A rectangular 1 x 6 plot (row with six plants and 0.36 m2 of floor area) was considered the adequate shape to evaluate seed yield of sesame cultivars and was also smaller than the size generally indicated in surveys with the sesame crop.

O gergelim é uma importante cultura oleaginosa e alimentícia, bem adaptada às condições da região semiárida, na qual o problema da salinidade é comum. Assim, objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a germinação e o crescimento das plântulas de gergelim submetidas ao estresse salino. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, aplicando cinco tratamentos, sendo os níveis de sais correspondente ás condutividades elétricas da água (0,6; 1,2; 1,8; 2,4 e 3,0 dS m-1) na cultivar de gergelim BRS seda, distribuídos em quatro repetições, totalizando 20 unidades experimentais. As variáveis analisadas foram à porcentagem, a primeira contagem, o índice de velocidade, o tempo médio de germinação, e as variáveis de crescimento das plântulas: comprimento total da plântula, do hipocótilo, da radícula primária, vigor e a massa fresca total da parte área e da radícula primária. Os resultados obtidos denotam que o aumento da salinidade na água ocasiona redução na germinação e no crescimento inicial das plântulas de gergelim. No se recomienda usar agua con concentraciones de sal de 1.2 dS m-1 en el establecimiento de la variedad de seda BRS.
