CRISPR-Based Genome Editing Tools: An Accelerator in Crop Breeding for a Changing Future

Abstract: Genome editing is an important strategy to maintain global food security and achieve sustainable agricultural development. Among all genome editing tools, CRISPR-Cas is currently the most prevalent and offers the most promise. In this review, we summarize the development of CRISPR-Cas systems, outline their classification and distinctive features, delineate their natural mechanisms in plant genome editing and exemplify the applications in plant research. Both classical and recently discovered CRISPR-Cas system… Show more

“…Cas13 proteins are displayed in at least 21 bacterial genomes and it consists of two distinct HEPN (higher eukaryote and prokaryote nucleotide binding) domains and a single protein effector [31] (Figure 3). CRISPR-Cas13 is the only known system among others to target single stranded RNA and owing to this ability, Cas13 has a potent application in plants to target RNA (coding and non-coding) and silence defense responses of RNA viruses [32].…”

“…New breeding techniques (NBTs) and in particular those based on genome editing (CRISPR/Cas9) encompasses an impressive and revolutionary set of molecular tools to enhance productivity by creating genetic variability for breeding purpose, disease-free and healthy planting genetic material, improvement in stress tolerance (Mote et al, 2022;Brower-Toland et al, 2023;Liu et al, 2023). The genome-editing approach can significantly accelerate the breeding times to select environmentally tolerant crop varieties (Zhang et al, 2023).…”
