Criterion validity, severity cut scores, and test-retest reliability of the Beck Depression Inventory-II in a university counseling center sample.

Abstract: The criterion validity of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; A. T. Beck, R. A. Steer, & G. K. Brown, 1996) was investigated by pairing blind BDI-II administrations with the major depressive episode portion of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I; M. B. First, R. L. Spitzer, M. Gibbon, & J. B. W. Williams, 1997) in a sample of 137 students receiving treatment at a university counseling center. Student BDI-II scores correlated strongly (r ϭ .83) with their number of SCID-I… Show more

“…(Sample item: ''0 = I do not feel sad, 1 = I feel sad much of the time, 2 = I am sad all the time, 3 = I am so sad or unhappy that I can't stand it.) The BDI-II has well-established reliability and validity, and it is widely used (Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Erbaugh, 1961;Sprinkle et al, 2002;Storch, Roberti, & Roth, 2004). Total scores are generally considered to represent minimal symptoms (0-13), mild symptoms (14-19), moderate symptoms (20-28) or severe symptoms (29-63).…”

“…Previous research in the field of psychology has validated a cut score of greater than or equal to 14 to identify individuals with clinically meaningful levels of depressive symptoms. 6,28,52,53,61 The BDI has been shown to be a reliable and valid measure of depression in individuals with pain, 26 and has been commonly used in studies using samples of patients with back and/or neck pain. 8,18,24,62 Pain Catastrophizing The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) was used to measure participants' levels of pain catastrophizing.…”
