Critical Factors Affecting Intergranular Corrosion of AA5083 Under Atmospheric Exposures

Abstract: Al-Mg 5XXX series alloys are widely used for marine applications due to their low cost, high strength-to-weight ratio and good weldability. These alloys can become susceptible to intergranular corrosion (IGC) due to precipitation of a more anodic β-phase (Al3Mg2) along grain boundaries after exposure to hot environments during service.
