Critical Josephson current in BCS-BEC–crossover superfluids

Abstract: We develop a microscopic model to describe the Josephson dynamics between two superfluid reservoirs of ultracold fermionic atoms which accounts for the dependence of the critical current on both the barrier height and the interaction strength along the crossover from BCS to BEC. Building on a previous study [F. Meier & W. Zwerger, Phys. Rev. A, 64 033610 (2001)] of weakly-interacting bosons, we derive analytic results for the Josephson critical current at zero temperature for homogeneous and trapped systems at… Show more

“…We note that j c is described in terms of the bulk current and the tunneling amplitude for a 3D condensate in Refs. [29,30]. We determine the estimate I c = j c Ly by using V = V 0 and d ≈ 1.2w, and by determining c(T ) and n 0 numerically.…”

“…This new effect, as well as the observation [10] of Josephson oscillations (JO), have been observed in a single BJJ [11,12]. This has raised a lot of interest in the study of BJJ and ongoing theoretical and experimental studies deal with dissipative [5,[13][14][15][16] and non-dissipative oscillations [17][18][19], supercurrent dynamics in ring shaped condensates [20][21][22], current phase relation of atomic BJJ [23,24], quantum transport [25,26], as well as their counterparts with fermionic superfluid atomic samples [27][28][29][30][31][32].…”

“…Given that our study identifies more than one relevant superfluid oscillations frequencies both at T = 0 and in the T > 0 regimes, it is appropriate here to briefly summarize prior relevant work identifying such multiple frequencies and the role of their arising couplings [19,20,38,55,61,[64][65][66][67].…”
