Critical Review on the Utilization of Handheld and Portable Raman Spectrometry in Meat Science

Abstract: Traditional methods for the determination of meat quality-relevant parameters are rather time-consuming and destructive, whereas spectroscopic methods offer fast and non-invasive measurements. This review critically deals with the application of handheld and portable Raman devices in the meat sector. Some published articles on this topic tend to convey the impression of unrestricted applicability of mentioned devices in this field of research. Furthermore, results are often subjected to over-optimistic interpr… Show more

“…Stress markers associated with changes in spectral reflectance also take time to accumulate; moreover, these markers may not allow for early stress detection to mitigate yield loss. Raman spectroscopy offers the possibility of a specific and early diagnostic tool 18,[22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29] .…”

“…In recent years, there has been growing interest in Raman spectroscopy as a high-content phenotyping tool for Precision Agriculture. Handheld Raman spectrometers have been used to monitor plant health and development, early diagnosis of disease, and biotic and abiotic stresses in plants 18,[22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29] . In the reported literature for plant Raman spectroscopy 18,[28][29][30][31] , either a leaf sample was collected from plants and stored until spectrum acquisition 20,[26][27][28] or whole plants were positioned around a spectrometer and leaves were placed on a sample holder without physical detachment from the plant 18,29,30 .…”

“…The progress in miniaturization accompanied by software development has led to the emergence of several handheld and portable devices based on spectroscopy for many applications in the food industry [198,199]. In this respect, an investigation based on a handheld NIR device and FT-NIR benchtop spectrometer was carried out in order to discriminate Atlantic cod from haddock fillets and patties [200].…”
