Crop biodiversity, risk management and the implications of agricultural assistance

Abstract: This paper presents a theoretical and empirical analysis of the impact of financial assistance to farms on crop biodiversity in an uncertain setting. The findings reveal that risk aversion is an important driving force for crop biodiversity conservation. Riskaverse farmers can hedge against the uncertainty they face by allocating land to different crop species. However, policies intended to stabilize revenues by supporting particular species may alter this link by delinking crop biodiversity from the managemen… Show more

“…Widawsky and Rozelle (1998) using data from regions of China found, instead, that the number of planted varieties reduces both the mean and the variance of rice yield. Di Falco and Perrings (2005), found a positive relationship between crop biodiversity and agricultural production in a case study on cereal production in southern Italy. Di Falco and Chavas (2006) found a positive correlation between crop genetic diversity and productivity.…”

“…5 Some applied economists have focused on the empirical assessment of the determinant of in situ crop biodiversity (e.g., Evenson, and Gollin 1997;Heisey et al 1997;Smale, Bellon, and Aguirre Gomez 2001;Smale et al 2003;Di Falco and Perrings 2005). Other authors have addressed the issue of the measurement of biodiversity (Solow, Polasky, and Broadus 1993;Weitzman 1992) and its role on potential commercial profits and its social value (e.g., Goeschl and Swanson 2002;Simpson, Sedjo, and Reid 1996). implications for resilience.…”

“…Yet, on the other hand, gaining of economic profits by improving agrarian structure and recovering infrastructure, can affect the landscape diversity as a consequence of decreasing number of mid-field balks, being field margins tiny uncultivated strips of lands, which demarcate land possession. Additionally, enlargement of arable plots done by removal of small biotopes, resulting in decline of biodiversity, not mention about lowering aesthetic values of landscape (Herzog 1998, Di Falco, Perrings 2005, Miranda et al 2006, Sklenicka 2006. Undoubtedly, it has consequences on cultural landscapes, because it leads to more homogeneous landscape and the loss of cultural value (Pasakarnis et al 2013).…”

“…Based on our earlier observation from pig production, it may be argued that integrating the peas and rapeseed on the dairy farm could lead to further reductions in GHG emissions in milk production. The trade off, however, is that increasing crop diversity also limits economies of scale and may decrease farm net revenues and increase labour cost (Di Falco and Perrings, 2005). The clover-grass silage used in the local scenario decreases the roughage content of the diet, resulting in about 3% increase in feed digestibility (Table 2), which in turn reduces enteric CH 4 emissions per unit of feed intake (McAllister et al, 1996).…”
