. Topsoil replacement depth and organic amendment effects on plant nutrient uptake from reclaimed natural gas wellsites. Can. J. Soil Sci. 86: 859-869. Sustained plant nutrient availability on reclaimed wellsites is critical to the successful restoration of crop productivity. This study evaluated topsoil replacement depth (TRD) (0, 50, 100, and 150% of mandatory TRD) and organic amendment [beef cattle feedlot manure, compost derived from straw-bedded cattle feedlot manure, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) straw, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) hay, and unamended control] effects on nutrient uptake by a wheat crop at three abandoned gas wellsites in south-central Alberta. Grain N uptake increased by 0.055 kg ha -1 for each percent increase in TRD, reflecting the corresponding linear increase in grain N concentration. Low carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratio amendments, particularly compost and alfalfa, were the most effective for improving grain N concentration and uptake. Conversely, N concentration and uptake were lowest for the high C:N (53:1) wheat straw amendment. Reclamation programs should, therefore, consider incorporation of the low C:N alfalfa or compost in order to safeguard against N deficiency in the first 1-2 yr following reclamation. Our results also show that high P amendments, such as manure and compost, are better choices for improving P uptake by spring wheat. These results emphasize the importance of topsoil replacement and amendment quality (C:N ratio and P concentration) in ensuring adequate N and P supply in the 1-2 yr following reclamation. Based on this, compost appears to be the best single amendment for ensuring enhanced uptake of both N and P on reclaimed wellsites in the short term.

The development of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracking has led to an increase in oil and natural gas extraction. Development of infrastructure to extract and transport these resources is expected to increase over the next few decades, resulting in extensive land disturbance. Although reclamation aims to sufficiently return disturbed lands to their pre‐disturbance use in an ecological sense, reclaimed rights‐of‐ways (ROW) commonly produce reduced crop yields. The objective of this study was to use meta‐analysis to determine soil disturbance trends across studies found in the peer‐reviewed literature. Papers that reported soil property data on disturbed ROWs and adjacent undisturbed sites were retrieved by searching the Web of Science database. Papers were separated by climate regions, resulting in analyses being conducted for studies in semiarid and humid climate regions. Results indicate that soil bulk density, soil organic matter, and pH are significantly increased on reclaimed ROWs. Soil metrics not incorporated in meta‐analysis due to insufficient observations or the possible presence of publication biases like a desire to publish significant results and poor study design (cation exchange capacity, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, total nitrogen, electrical conductivity, sodium, sodium adsorption ratio, and texture) are assessed and discussed. Best management practices gleaned from studies incorporated into meta‐analysis are discussed to provide strategies to limit soil property disturbances.

Disturbed sites, such as borrow pits and oil and natural gas well sites, require reclamation to restore and sustain levels of productivity similar to those prior to the disturbance. However, salvaged topsoil at many sites is often insufficient to meet the 80% topsoil replacement depth (TRD80) required for successful reclamation in western Canada. This 5‐year study evaluated soil responses to 50% topsoil replacement depth without organic amendment (TRD50) or amended with either peat (PTRD50) or biochar (BTRD50), relative to the TRD80 treatment (Control), following borrow pit reclamation at a disturbed boreal site near Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada. Amendments were applied once at rates calculated to raise the soil organic carbon (SOC) content in the TRD50 soil to a level equal to that in the TRD80 treatment. Results showed a 143%, 87%, and 116% increase in total Kjeldahl nitrogen concentration in the PTRD50 relative to the TRD80, TRD50, and BTRD50 treatments, respectively, while soil potassium (K) concentration was significantly greater for BTRD50 than PTRD50. Peat and biochar significantly increased SOC concentrations by 83% and 88%, respectively, relative to the mean of TRD80 and TRD50 treatments. Our results show that peat and biochar can improve soil properties of disturbed boreal sites reclaimed with insufficient salvaged topsoil to a level suitable for successful reclamation. This has important implications on the reclamation of a multitude of disturbed sites, in Canada and globally, that have insufficient volumes of salvaged topsoil needed for successful reclamation.
