Crowdsourcing Bicycle Volumes: Exploring the role of volunteered geographic information and established monitoring methods

Abstract: The recent interest in performance measures and new bicycle infrastructure development has triggered rapid advancements in monitoring methods for active transportation, but comprehensive monitoring programs for the bicycle mode are far from ubiquitous. This study evaluates the use of GPS survey data and a new crowdsourced volume dataset that may offer promise to extend the reach of limited counting programs. The authors integrated count data from 5 separate trail locations in Austin, Texas, with a previous sur… Show more

“…The data produced by cycling mobile applications are being used to perform mobility analyses in cities. Analyzing the most commonly used routes as well as the origins and destinations will allow policymakers to map out mobility strategies and make decisions based on real data [78,79]. However, self-monitoring bike riding activities are related to a specific context or intent, such as sports and health monitoring [80], which lack some accuracy in data acquisition.…”

“…Planners have used crowdsourcing techniques to identify and assess historic structures (Minner, Holleran, Roberts, & Conrad, 2015); collect travel data (Griffin & Jiao 2015), and to assess property conditions (Thompson, 2016). Some scholars suggest that these techniques might support planning in a manner that is convenient to participants and geographically specific, providing useful information to planners (Evans-Cowley & Hollander, 2010;Griffin, 2014;Kahila-Tani, Broberg, Kyttä, & Tyger, 2016).…”
