Crown and root biomass equations for the small trees of Pinus koraiensis under canopy

Abstract: Estimation of tree biomass is an essential part of studies on carbon sequestration and cycling in forest ecosystem. Small trees grow in the understory and allometric development is different from that of mature trees. However, less attention has been paid to biomass estimates of small trees, especially in mixed forest where tree competition is intensive. Tree allometric equations at both branch level and at whole tree level were, thus, developed and compared for the small trees of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis… Show more

“…Variation in the tree biomass and its allocation to components was commonly found in comparisons among individuals, ages, stands, regions, and species [ 49 51 ]. In the study, the proportion of trunk biomass to total tree biomass significantly increased at a level of 0.05 in the young forest to the mature forest and represented the greatest portion of the total biomass, which also could be found in other studies [ 52 53 ].…”

“…Wang et al . [ 76 ] demonstrated that crown width is an important determinant of leaf biomass for Korean pine ( Pinus koraiensis ). We also found that equations with the variable CR greatly improved root biomass estimates (Tables 2 and 4 ).…”

“…Broadleaf forests, with their superior water regulation strategy (Lee et al 2021), stronger leaf stomatal regulation (van der Molen et al 2011) and characteristic water uptake depth of the root systems (Wang et al 2013), have been shown to efficiently access water and sustain photosynthesis during drought conditions. In contrast, coniferous forests, shrubs and grasslands exhibit lower resistance to this extreme event, primarily due to their limited biodiversity (Wang et al 2021, Renard et al 2023.…”
