The Canadian Shield is one of the largest exposures of Precambrian rocks on Earth. It is a mosaic of several Archean terranes that were brought together during a series of Paleoproterozoic orogens culminating in the so-called Trans-Hudson orogen, which is thought to have been similar to the Himalayan orogen in scale and nature. The tectonic evolution and lithospheric subdivisions of this region are poorly understood, but new seismic networks in northern Hudson Bay provide fresh opportunity to place constraints on the Precambrian processes that formed and shaped it. We show, via a study of seismic anisotropy, that the lithosphere of the northern Hudson Bay region retains a strong signature of Archean-Paleoproterozoic tectonics. We map the boundary between the upper (Churchill) and lower (Superior) plates that collided ca. 1.8 Ga and identify back azimuthdependent splitting parameters (φ, δt) on Baffi n Island that indicate complex anisotropy (e.g., dipping fabric) beneath the region. Our results support the view that signifi cant lithospheric deformation occurred during the Paleoproterozoic and that modern-day plate tectonic processes were thus in operation by at least ca.

The Rae craton on Melville Peninsula, Nunavut, comprises several lithotectonic domains, including a structurally and lithologically distinct yet poorly known crustal terrane, the Repulse Bay block (RBb). This study presents new lithological and petrographic observations, combined with U-Pb zircon data, to better understand the Archean and Paleoproterozoic crustal evolution of the RBb. The new data demonstrate that the central-eastern RBb consists of the following: (i) upper amphibolite-to granulite-facies, ca. 2.73-2.71 Ga intermediate granitoid gneisses and gabbroic sheets; (ii) ca. 2.69 Ga two-pyroxene charnockite to enderbite intrusions; and (iii) thin slivers of both Archean and Paleoproterozoic supracrustal rocks. Inherited zircon also attests to the presence of a Mesoarchean to Paleoarchean substrate. A semi-pelitic gneiss from one of the Paleoproterozoic supracrustal panels was deposited sometime after ca. 1.89 Ga and shows a similar detrital zircon age profile to a <1.92 Ga semi-pelitic gneiss from the Lyon Inlet boundary zone at the northern extent of the RBb. Zircon in most rocks analyzed record metamorphism related to the Trans-Hudson orogeny between ca. 1.84 and 1.82 Ga. Results from this study are most consistent with the RBb, representing a piece of lower to middle crustal level of the Rae craton, rather than a distinct and separate crustal entity (i.e., an exotic block).Résumé : Le craton de Rae, sur la péninsule de Melville, au Nunavut, comprend plusieurs domaines lithotectoniques, incluant le bloc de Repulse Bay (RBb), un terrane crustal mal connu, à structure et lithologie distinctes. Cette étude présente de nouvelles observations lithologiques et pétrographiques, combinées à des données U-Pb déterminées sur des zircons, afin de mieux comprendre l'évolution crustale du RBb à l'Archéen et au Paléoprotérozoïque. Les nouvelles données démontrent que le RBb centre-est comprend : (i) des gneiss granitoïdes intermédiaires et des feuillets de gabbro au faciès des amphibolites supérieur au faciès des granulites, datant d'environ 2,73 à 2,71 Ga, (ii) deux intrusions de pyroxène, de charnockite à enderbite, datant d'environ 2,69 Ga et (iii) de minces échardes de roches supracrustales, datant de l'Archéen et du Paléoprotérozoïque. Des zircons hérités attestent aussi la présence d'un substrat mésoarchéen à paléoarchéen. Un gneiss semi-pélitique provenant de l'un des panneaux supracrustaux (Paléoprotérozoïque) a été mis en place quelque temps après~1,89 Ga et il a un profil d'âge de zircon détritique similaire à celui d'un gneiss semipélitique, <1,92 Ga, de la zone bordure de l'anse Lyon à l'extrémité nord du RBb. Dans la plupart des roches analysées, le zircon enregistre le métamorphisme relié à l'orogène trans-hudsonien entre~1,84 et 1,82 Ga. Precambrian tectonic processes are debated: what was the nature and scale of orogenic events on the younger, hotter, and more ductile Earth? Northern Hudson Bay records the Paleoproterozoic collision between the Western Churchill and Superior plates-the 1.8 Ga Trans-Hudson Orogeny (THO)-and is an ideal locality to study Precambrian tectonic structure. Integrated field, geochronological, and thermobarometric studies suggest that the THO was comparable to the present-day Himalayan-Karakoram-Tibet Orogen (HKTO). However, detailed understanding of the deep crustal architecture of the THO, and how it compares to that of the evolving HKTO, is lacking. The joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave data provides new Moho depth estimates and shear velocity models for the crust and uppermost mantle of the THO. Most of the Archean crust is relatively thin (39 km) and structurally simple, with a sharp Moho; upper-crustal wave speed variations are attributed to postformation events. However, the QuebecBaffin segment of the THO has a deeper Moho (45 km) and a more complex crustal structure. Observations show some similarity to recent models, computed using the same methods, of the HKTO crust. Based on Moho character, present-day crustal thickness, and metamorphic grade, we support the view that southern Baffin Island experienced thickening during the THO of a similar magnitude and width to present-day Tibet. Fast seismic velocities at >10 km below southern Baffin Island may be the result of partial eclogitization of the lower crust during the THO, as is currently thought to be happening in Tibet.
