Cryopreserved amniotic membrane and umbilical cord particulate matrix for partial rotator cuff tears

Abstract: Amniotic membrane (AM) and umbilical cord (UC) are well known to have anti-inflammatory properties and have been shown to promote healing in various orthopedic indications. This study investigated whether intra-articular injection of AM/UC particulate matrix promotes healing of partial rotator cuff tears (RCTs). A case series was performed on 10 patients that received injection of 50 mg AM/UC for partial RCTs that were refractory to conservative treatment. Outcomes included Penn Shoulder Score (PSS)… Show more

“…A variety of flowable CTMs are now commercially available for the augmentation of tendon repair [ 2 , 8 , 20 , 22 , 23 , 35 ]. Human placental CTMs represent a unique subset of biological scaffold particulates, given the inherent structural, biochemical, and immunogenic properties of placental tissue [ 23 , 35 ].…”

“…UCT stimulates various metabolic processes such as general protein and collagen synthesis, which in turn reduce pain. UCT is safe in humans and animals and its uses include burn treatment, painful chronic wound healing, and in the shoulder, foot, and ankle surgeries [22][23][24][25].…”

“…Ackley et al 46 injected 50 mg of amniotic membrane and umbilical cord particulate matrix as part of non-operative treatment in 10 patients with partial rotator cuff tears. Improved functional outcome scores were reported at 6 months but no change in tear size was found on MRI.…”
