Cryosurgery as primary treatment for localized prostate cancer

Abstract: Early results suggest that cryotherapy offers a safe and effective alternative for the primary treatment of localized prostate cancer. Additional studies with longer follow-up are necessary to determine the sustained efficacy of this procedure.

“…Lian et al addressed the preliminary results of 102 patients underwent primary cryoablation for clinically localized PCa from January 2006 to December 2009 in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital. The early results of their study suggest that cryoablation offers a safe and effective alternative for the primary treatment of localized prostate cancer [ 24 ]. Recently, Zhou et al analysed the results of a study of 23 patients with metastatic BC under percutaneous cryosurgery.…”

“…This method stems from similar minimally invasive ablation techniques pioneered by general surgeons. 19,35,40,68 Stereotactic laser ablation produces high temperatures that lead to tissue coagulation, necrosis, and cellular apoptosis. [2][3][4]7,32,60,73 Research in animals has shown that ablation produces a histologically proven immediate disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and subsequent neovascularization, which can be observed as enhancement on MRI sequences.…”

“…Repeating the freeze-thaw cycle leads to remarkable cell killing due to recrystallisation, cellular swelling and bursting [30]. Some authors have reported that they use this third-generation prostate cryotherapy as the primary treatment for low-risk and localised prostate cancers and achieve satisfactory early clinical outcomes [31]. Nerve-sparing cryotherapy is expected to decrease the high erectile dysfunction (ED) rates, while use of a urethral warming device can protect the urethra from damage due to over-freezing [32].…”
