“…47,48 The shape and position of this Dy feature are similar to those of other XMCD spectra of insulators containing Dy (Dy 2 O 3 ). 49 Moreover, the L 2,3 -edge XMCD spectra of the {Fe 3 DyO 2 } and {Fe 3 GdO 2 } complexes (Fig. 4) are comparable with those of the binary DyAl 2 and GdAl 2 compounds, and Al-rich Ln(Al 1−x Fe x ) compounds (with Ln = Dy and Gd), shown in Refs.…”

“…The goal of our work is to investigate the accuracy of the proposed superexchange mechanism to explain the nnn predominant interaction between radicals in 1 and to try to understand the origin of the differences of the macroscopic magnetic properties between 1 and 2 . To do that, we report here an X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study of the chains 1 and 2 at the Gd M 4,5 -edges (3d 10 4f 7 → 3d 9 4f 8 transitions, probe of the 4f Gd half-filled orbitals) and L 2,3 -edges (2p 6 4f 7 5d 0 → 2p 5 4f 7 5d 1 transitions, probe of the 5d Gd orbitals). These compounds were chosen inside the family of Gd(hfac) 3 NITR products because 1 and 2 show the more pronounced antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic behaviors, respectively.…”

“…It is very interesting to see that the agreement between theoretical calculation and experiment is very good. Furthermore, our calculations show that the dipolar contribution displays a derivative shape 10 of the spin-averaged spectra, especially in the low energy side ͑see Fig. 3͒.…”

“…This indicates a clear improvement of the quality of XMCD compared to spectra published previously where this feature could not be detected. 10 The main peak in the XMCD corresponds to the dipolar part, presenting opposite signs at the L 3 and L 2 edges. The arrows indi-a͒ Author to whom correspondence should be addressed; electronic mail: babgroup@physik.fu-berlin.de cate the position of the quadrupolar contributions, where for each edge the sign is opposite to that of the dipolar part.…”
