Crystal structures of two isostructural bivalent metal N-benzoylglycinates

Abstract

<jats:p>The crystal structures of two coordination compounds of <jats:italic>N</jats:italic>-benzoylglycine, <jats:italic>viz. catena</jats:italic>-poly[[[diaquabis(<jats:italic>N</jats:italic>-benzoylglycinato)cobalt(II)]-μ-aqua] dihydrate], {[Co(C<jats:sub>9</jats:sub>H<jats:sub>8</jats:sub>NO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>(H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>]·2H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O}<jats:sub> <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> </jats:sub>, <jats:bold>1</jats:bold>, and <jats:italic>catena</jats:italic>-poly[[[diaquabis(<jats:italic>N</jats:italic>-benzoylglycinato)nickel(II)]-μ-aqua] dihydrate], {[Ni(C<jats:sub>9</jats:sub>H<jats:sub>8</jats:sub>NO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>(H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>]·2H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O}<jats:sub> <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> </jats:sub>, <jats:bold>2</jats:bold>, are described. The structures of <jats:bold>1</jats:bold> and <jats:bold>2</jats:bold> were reported previously [Morelock <jats:italic>et al.</jats:italic> (1979). <jats:italic>J. Am. Chem. Soc.</jats:italic> <jats:bold>101</jats:bold>, 4858–4866] and redetermined in this work to determine the H-atom coordinates. In the isostructural compounds, the central metal is located on an inversion centre and exhibits a distorted octahedral geometry. A pair of terminal aqua ligands disposed <jats:italic>trans</jats:italic> to each other and a pair of monodentate <jats:italic>N</jats:italic>-benzoylglycinate ligands form the square base and account for four of the six vertices of the octahedron. A μ<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>-bridging aqua ligand links the bivalent metals into one-dimensional chains extending along the <jats:italic>c-</jats:italic>axis direction. The one-dimensional chains stabilized by O—H...O hydrogen bonds are interlinked by N—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions.</jats:p>
