Abstract:Culvert whistlers created from acoustic waves in air confined by large cylinders are analyzed with both wave and geometrical ray models. Two distinct types of whistlers, on-axis and off-axis, are shown to have compatible explanations from both models that completely account for their time-dependent and frequency characteristics. The work of previous authors is revised and extended.
