Curcumin promotes burn wound healing in mice by upregulating caveolin‐1 in epidermal stem cells

Abstract: We aimed to explore the effect of curcumin on epidermal stem cells (ESCs) in regulating wound healing and the underlying molecular mechanism. We treated mouse ESCs isolated from skin tissues with curcumin, and then assessed the proliferation ability of cells induced by epidermal growth factor using cell counting kit-8 assay. The pluripotency of ESCs was evaluated as well through examination of Nanog expression in ESCs. Further, mice with skin burns were treated with ESCs with or without curcumin pretreatments.… Show more

“…Fourteen studies [ 16 , 28 , 29 , 37 39 , 41 , 44 50 ] used rats, six studies [ 17 , 30 , 40 , 42 , 43 , 51 ] used mice, and two studies [ 36 , 52 ] used minipigs. A total of 10 studies were conducted in China [ 29 , 30 , 37 , 39 , 40 , 43 , 47 49 , 51 ], 3 studies in Brazil [ 16 , 28 , 41 ], 3 studies in the USA [ 36 , 42 , 52 ], and 2 studies in Iran [ 38 , 45 ], whereas the remaining 4 were conducted in Pakistan [ 46 ], Egypt [ 44 ], Turkey [ 50 ], and Canada [ 17 ], respectively. Four studies [ 40 , 43 , 48 , 51 ] did not report burn degree and two [ 38 , 45 ] used second-degree burns, while the others used third-degree.…”

“…Application of curcumin prompts an upregulation of Cav-1 expression in these cells. In contrast, genetic ablation of Cav-1 almost completely abrogates the effects of curcumin on cell proliferation and wound closure [73]. This mechanism may be involved in skin improvements observed after topical application of curcumin in different inflammatory skin disorders, including psoriasis and cutaneous wounds.…”

“…each measurement was repeated three times, with the average value taken as the experiments result. The percentage of wound closure was calculated according to previous reports (9,10,37). it should be noted that the sign of wound closure was defined when the wound bed was re-epithelialized and covered with regenerated tissue.…”
