Aeromagnetic data were analyzed to determine the Curie point depth (CPD) by power density spectral and threedimensional inversion methods within and surrounding Death Valley in southern California. We calculated the CPD for 0.5°r egions using 2D power density spectral methods and found that the CPDs varied between 8 and 17 km. However, the 0.5°region may average areas that include shallow and deep CPDs, and because of this limitation, we used the 3D inversion method to determine if this method may provide better resolution of the CPDs. The final 3D model indicates that the depth to the bottom of the magnetic susceptible bodies varies between 5 and 23 km. Even though both methods produced roughly similar results, the 3D inversion method produced a higher lateral resolution of the CPDs. The shallowest CPDs occur within the central and southern Death Valley, Panamint Valley, Coso geothermal field and the Tecopa hot springs region. Deeper ([15 km) CPDs occur over outcropping granitic and Precambrian lithologies in the Panamint Range, Grapevine Mountains, Black Mountains and the Argus Range. The shallowest CPD occurs within the central Death Valley over a possible seismically imaged magma body and slightly deeper values occur within the Panamint Valley, southern Death Valley and Tecopa Hot Springs. The shallow CPD values suggest that partially molten material may also be found in these latter regions. The CPD computed heat flow values for the region suggest that the entire area has high heat flow values ([100 mW m -2 ), on the other hand, locally extremely high values ([200 mW m -2 ) occur within the Panamint Valley, the southern and central Death Valley and Tecopa Hot Springs region. These locally high heat flow values may be related to midcrustal magma bodies; but additional geophysical experiments are needed to determine if the magma bodies exist.

Integration of an Aeromagnetic Measurement System Based on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Platform and Its Application in the Exploration of the Ma’anshan Magnetite Deposit

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aeromagnetic measurement system can precisely obtain large-scale data with high efficiency and low cost in regions with complex exploration conditions, which has aroused interest in the field of aerial survey. In this paper, based on the unmanned helicopter platform, an aeronautical magnetic field measurement system is integrated to complete the integration of a rotor UAV, magnetometers, and data recorders. Equipped with a three-axis fluxgate magnetometer for real-time flight compensation, the compensation deviation is ±0.052 nT, which meets the aeromagnetic survey specifications. The UAV can fly autonomously with a maximum load of 45 kg at a speed of 60 km/h for 2 h, and the wind resistance level is level 7. The system has completed a field test of 111.9 km in the Ma'anshan crisis mine region of China and collected 145,495 data points. Then, the adaptive down-sampling method is used to compress the data (to 1.7% of the original data), and it is applied to the three-dimensional magnetic inversion, which successfully obtains the spatial distribution characteristics of the underground orebody, improving the inversion efficiency while ensuring the target area resolution. Six favorable magnetite prospecting sites are delineated in the survey area through inversion results, which demonstrates the potential of the developed UAV aeromagnetic system in the exploration over the areas with complex terrain.

The tectonic lineaments and thermal structure of Lake Magadi, southern Kenyan rift system, were investigated using ASTER data and geophysical methods. Five N-S faults close to known hot springs were identified for geoelectric ground investigation. Aeromagnetic data were employed to further probe faults at greater depths and determine the Curie-point depth. Results indicate a funnel-shaped fluid-filled (mostly saline hydrothermal) zone with relatively low resistivity values of less than 1 Ω-m, separated by resistive structures to the west and east, to a depth of 75 m along the resistivity profiles. There was evidence of saline hydrothermal fluid flow toward the surface through the fault splays. The observed faults extend from the surface to a depth of 7.5 km and are probably the ones that bound the graben laterally. They serve as major conduits for the upward heat flux in the study area. The aeromagnetics spectral analysis also revealed heat source emplacement at a depth of about 12 km. The relative shallowness implies a high geothermal gradient evidenced in the surface manifestations of hot springs along the lake margins. Correlation of the heat source with the hypocenters showed that the seismogenetic zone exists directly above the magmatic intrusion, forming the commencement of geodynamic activities.
