Current Advances on the Structure, Bioactivity, Synthesis, and Metabolic Regulation of Novel Ubiquinone Derivatives in the Edible and Medicinal Mushroom Antrodia cinnamomea

Abstract: In recent years, Antrodia cinnamomea has attracted great attention around the world as an extremely precious edible and medicinal mushroom. Ubiquinone derivatives, which are characteristic metabolites of A. cinnamomea, have shown great bioactivities. Some of them have been regarded as promising therapeutic agents and approved into clinical trial by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Although some excellent reviews have been published covering different aspects of A. cinnamomea, this review brings, for the … Show more

“…Edible/medicinal fungi or mushrooms, generally regarded as healthy foods and nutraceutical products, continue to attract growers’ and researchers’ attention, with an over 30-fold increase of world production and consumption ratios since 1978 [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Polysaccharides and polysaccharide-protein or peptide complexes are major health-benefitting macromolecules of edible/medicinal mushrooms, showing notable anti-tumor [ 4 ], immunomodulatory [ 5 ], anti-inflammatory [ 6 ] and antioxidative effects [ 7 ].…”

“…is indicates that although the mycelium of Antrodia cinnamomea does not affect blood pressure in healthy adults, it may promote the health of patients with mild hypertension. [21] Similarly, although the results of the present study indicate that Antrodia cinnamomea mycelium has no significant effect on blood glucose and triglyceride levels in healthy subjects, it has been shown to be effective in improving obesity and hypertriglyceridemia in both animal and human trials [22][23][24]. During the entire clinical trial, the blood biochemical values of the subjects were regularly monitored every month.…”

“…Antrodia cinnamomea , also called Antrodia camphorata , is a food source used in traditional Chinese medicine. 7 Crude extracts of A camphorata exhibit a wide range of biological activities, with several studies having focused on its anticancer effects. The hepatoprotective activities 8 and activities against liver injury 9 of A camphorata have also been reported.…”
