Current and Emerging Materials for 3-5 Micron IR Transmission

Abstract: New, more durable windows and domes will be required for future 3 -5 micron IR systems. Various oxide and oxynitride crystalline materials are candidates for these new requirements, including sapphire, spinel, ALON, yttria, and MgO.These materials are compared with respect to optical properties, durability, and fabrication costs. Two extrinsic properties, thermal conductivity and fracture strength, have strong effects on thermal shock resistance. Birefringent polycrystalline materials will not have adequate op… Show more

“…Further analysis reveals that the samples with higher concentration show very low thermal conductivity which falls below the ideal range and are not desirable for a high quality transparent window which is used for strategic defence and space mission [19]. The variations of thermal conductivity with temperature for different La 3+ concentration sintered via microwave hybrid heating are shown in Fig.…”

“…To achieve high thermal shock resistance figure of merit to prevent the shattering of the window material during the missile flight, it should possess high thermal conductivity. Ideally the thermal conductivity values should be in the range of 7-50 W·m 1 ·K 1 [19]. Even though the thermal conductivity is playing a vital role in the performance of high quality transparent window, not much work is reported in the literature regarding this.…”

“…Here h is the heat transfer coefficient and L is the characteristic dimension, which could be the thickness of the window or dome. Table 6.5 compares the thermal shock parameter of CVD-SiC with that of several competing materials [48], [49]. We see that CVD-SiC provides a thermal shock parameter value that is significantly greater than those of all other materials, except CVD diamond.…”

“…MgAl 2 O 4 is one of the most excellent optical materials with good light transmission properties in the infrared band, high hardness and corrosion resistance, and has been widely used in a number of military and civilian fields [1][2][3]. However, it is difficult to get smooth surface meeting the practical requirement efficiently because it is crisp and hard, brittle and easy to break.…”
