Current concepts: scapular dyskinesis

Abstract: The scapula serves many roles in order for proper shoulder function to occur. These roles include providing synchronous scapular rotation during humeral motion, serving as a stable base for rotator cuff activation and functioning as a link in the kinetic chain. Each role is vital to proper arm function and can only occur when the anatomy around the shoulder is uncompromised. The presence of bony and soft tissue injury as well as muscle weakness and inflexibility can alter the roles of the scapula and alter sca… Show more

“…The movement execution was recorded in a posterior view by a digital camcorder with a sampling frequency of 60 Hz (SONY model DCR-SX21), positioned on a tripod 1.00m high in relation to the floor and at 2.85 meters from the subject. Ground markings were used to standardize the position of the camcorder and the volunteers 25 . The categorization of the scapular dyskinesis type was performed according to Kibler et al 26 guidelines.…”

“…protraction, lateral rotation, tilting) are retained. As such, clinical observation of tilting and winging in rest and during movement is chosen to assess threedimensional scapular protraction and tilting (Kibler & Sciascia, 2010;Nijs, Roussel, Vermeulen, & Souvereyns, 2005;Struyf et al, 2009;Struyf et al, 2011;Struyf et al, 2013); these scapular rotations are further assessed with the scapular distance test, the pectoralis minor index and the acromial index (Borstad & Ludewig, 2005;DiVeta, Walker, & Skibinski, 1990;Nijs et al, 2005;Struyf, Meeus, et al, 2014). Scapular lateral rotation is assessed based on inclinometry at different forward flexion heights (Watson, Balster, Finch, & Dalziel, 2005).…”
