Current dark matter annihilation constraints from CMB and low-redshift data

Abstract: Updated constraints on the dark matter cross section and mass are presented combining cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum measurements from Planck, WMAP9, ACT, and SPT as well as several low-redshift data sets (BAO, HST, and supernovae). For the CMB data sets, we combine WMAP9 temperature and polarization data for l ≤ 431 with Planck temperature data for 432 ≤ l ≤ 2500, ACT and SPT data for l > 2500, and Planck CMB four-point lensing measurements. We allow for redshiftdependent energy deposition f… Show more

“…Observations of the ionization history of the Universe from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) constrain DM annihilation during recombination [82,83], in particular the process XX → φφ → e + e − e + e − . A recent analysis combining several cosmological datasets found m X > 30 GeV for σv ann fixed by relic abundance and if BR(φ → e + e − ) = 1 [84,85], as in the case of kinetic mixing. Implications for indirect detection searches (e.g., Fermi and AMS-2) are also important and will be considered elsewhere [86].…”

“…Constraints from CMB distortions are largely insensitive to systematic uncertainties [96][97][98][99][100][101][102], and with the latest CMB data from Planck correspond to the limit [89] f eff σv m χ 3 × 10 −28 cm 3 /s/GeV . (5.5)…”

“…Thermal relic dark matter sets a natural scale for the thermally averaged DM annihilation cross section around σ ann v rel 6 × 10 −26 cm 3 s −1 . This scale can be searched for in CMB [71], gamma-ray [72], and even neutrino data [73]. Both CMB and gamma-ray data have breached thermal relic sensitivity for light DM masses.…”
